History
The Outreach department of Mid-Columbia Library
was started in the early 70's with a Library Services and Construction Act
grant. In the beginning, deliveries were made to local Benton and
Franklin County nursing homes and to the Walla Walla State Prison, many who now
have their own libraries.
With the assistance of 14 volunteers,
cooperating with service agencies, services to patrons who could not come to
the library included programs, activities, and movie showings.
The Mid-Columbia Library Outreach/Homebound
service now includes taking library materials to individuals, retirement homes,
nursing homes, and private care homes for incarcerated youth and the
elderly. In conjunction with The Friends of the Mid-Columbia Library,
donated books are given to the Benton County Jail and any other organization
that can use books or materials to help others learn to read English, or who
don't have access to reading materials.
Due to vision problems, many people are using
audio books on tape, movie videos, CD's and large type books and magazines.
