Where the Red Fern Grows

By Wilson Rawls

This book is about a boy and two hound dogs.  The boy had to work really hard to buy the dogs; he had to buy them with his own money because his family didn’t have that much money. So, the boy and his dogs get to go to a hound-dog hunting contest, so the boy gets ready.  He takes his father and grandpa.  So, they get to the hound-dog hunting contest and then five days later they get to go hunting but then about midnight a blizzard starts.  Fortunately, nothing bad happens to the dogs, the boy, or the dad, but the grandpa twists his ankle.  So, the boy and the dogs win the contest by catching four coons. In the end, the dogs die and a red fern grows where they get buried.

The characters are a brave boy (the main character) and two hound dogs named “Little Ann” and “Old Dan”.  There’s the boy’s mother and father and the boy’s three cute little sisters and a grandpa.
